Redefine the New Year with Purpose and Joy
Are you into resolutions? Do you call them intentions? Or do you prefer lifestyle changes sprinkled throughout the year? Maybe you’ve been contemplating your purpose in life, or perhaps you already know that your value doesn’t depend on what you do or achieve.
I lean toward lifestyle changes, along with picking one, two, or even three words to guide me through the New Year. But I don’t stress about when I come up with the word/s. There’s already enough pressure in life without turning self-growth into another deadline.
The Weight of Purpose vs. The Power of Presence
We’re constantly surrounded by expectations and the relentless push to “find our purpose.” No wonder so many people feel like failures. Society makes it seem like the meaning of life is something to chase or discover, like some mythical treasure. But what if we’ve had it all along, just as Glinda the good witch told Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz?
Recognizing the simplicity of being fully present can shift how we view our choices and our lives. It’s not about searching for some big meaning to life; it’s about understanding the value of being our unique selves. Instead of chasing, we can focus on embracing who we already are and the power of each moment.
For instance: my ‘purpose’ in this very moment is focused on putting my thoughts into words. I’m being fully present and intentional right now. Why? Well, for starters, this process helps me help you help me (Yes, I’m channeling Jerry Maguire, classic movie moment). It allows me to process my experiences and share some of my reflections. Whether or not others read them isn’t the point. This creative outlet brings me joy, and that joy feels like part of my purpose. Wait, have I just stumbled on my word for 2025? Nooooo, it feels so cliché!
Not everyone wants to follow the traditional markers of success. For some, the traditional 9-to-5 job, home ownership, starting a family, or pursuing the so-called 'American Dream' doesn’t align with them.
The real question is: does the money you earn fund your curiosity and creativity? Wealth isn’t measured by money alone but by health, kindness, connection, and joy.
Redefine the New Year
The New Year brings a lot of noise: big goals, bold moves, and expectations of quick results. But who says we have to let societal pressure dictate our pace?
Maybe this year could be about:
Simplifying our schedule: Creating space for what matters most by cutting back on nonessential commitments.
Cutting the noise: Tuning out distractions and information overload to focus on what adds value to our life.
Embracing joy: Discovering what lights us up, even if it’s unconventional.
Or maybe it’s about something entirely unique to you. Whatever it is, lean into your instincts and allow yourself the freedom to be curious, to experiment, and to play. Take that class you’ve been dreaming about. Paint, write, travel, skip, become a chef… whatever brings you joy.
Live without societal pressure or expectations, but guided by love, kindness, and your inner compass. Most importantly, love yourself through it all, knowing that you’re already enough just as you are. As Glinda the good witch said, “You’ve always had the power, my dear. You just had to learn it for yourself.”
Thank you for being a part of my process as I discover my 2025 word. Last year, my words were "Find My Fun." This year, I’m leaning toward that cliché word, joy. However, I’ve also considered emotional intelligence because I believe that’s where our future is heading.
Share your New Year’s traditions or word that’s guiding you into 2025, I’d love to hear them!

This year was freedom spelled fREADom. Not sure yet what the word is for 2025. It picks me, I don't pick it.
Believe was 2016 and while that one is my most cliched word of the year it was apropos.
You must be the person that everyone in your day to day life turns to. And I could listen to you read all day.
