Behind the Song: Send It | Hot Rod Rock
Hot rods, hard rock, and a battle to win. Vote for our song today!
Behind the Song:
This song began with a conversation between friends. I had previously written a ZZ Top-style song for my friend’s hot rod. When he played it for his buddy, it made him think of what kind of song he would like to hear about his 1970’s Malibu.
So, my friend came to me with a challenge: Create an 80’s hard rock head-banger song that captures the spirit of his buddy’s car.
Lyrics
He sent me photos and videos of the car along with a few phrases to use for inspiration:
‘70 Malibu
540 cubic inch big-block
Blower
Pro street
1000 horsepower
Smoke the tires
Send it
Kilroy
I’m not an expert on engine specs, but after researching, I made sure every word hit with the right energy and authenticity.
Knowing the music style was important to have before creating the lyrics. I knew it had to be an adrenaline-fueled, hard-hitting rock song. So, the lyrics needed to match that type of style.
This took the longest in the process because I wanted it to feel like you were driving this beast. Feeling the adrenaline deep in your soul with lyrics that would match the beat.
Sound and Style
Once I had the lyrics, I added some hard rock prompts into the music style section on Suno (which only allows up to 200 characters). After tweaking it a little from hearing a few versions that didn’t quite sound right, this is what I ended up with for this version:
Hard rock, 80’s influence, powerful deep male vocals, heavy guitar riffs, punch drums, driving bass lines, adrenaline-pumping energy, rebellious vibe.
To achieve that adrenaline rush I added some instrumental prompts within the lyrics section also. You can see a couple of examples that I added in the brackets:
Verse 1: Blower growls, a pulse that shakes, Vibration hits, every move it makes. Kilroy's in the driver's seat, Hands grip tight, rattling to its own beat. [Heavy drum kick to accent the growl and vibration, pulsing bass line] Pre-Chorus: Pedal down, heavy on the floor, 540 cubic inch big-block, can't be ignored. [Drums slow, powerful build-up] Chorus: Hearts pound, adrenaline spikes, Pro Street’s alive, ready to strike. Send it! [growling] Ohhh, yeah! [low-pitched guitar slide mimicking an engine accelerating] Yeahhh, send it! [layered vocal "VROOM" with heavy drum kick and bass drop] Smoke the tires, shred the night, Kilroy was here, taking the light. Send it!
The Meaning Behind “Kilroy Was Here”
“Kilroy Was Here” is a nod to the iconic WWII graffiti, which became a global symbol of presence and impact. However, it also happens to be the owner's last name. Pretty wild, right?!
The Video: Bringing It to Life
Once the song was done, I put together a video using Canva. Adding the song to the stunning photos and clips of his Malibu in action. I really wanted the energy of the song to match the visuals.
A Collaborative Experience
What an honor it was to create a song for someone's pride and joy. The owner, his friends, and family all love it. That alone makes the process worth it.
It was such a fun, collaborative project. I got to pour my creative energy into something meaningful, and in return, I helped bring someone else a little bit of joy.
Get Involved
And now, I cannot believe our song is in a radio contest. It feels like it belongs to all of us! Friends, family, classic car enthusiasts, hard rock lovers, and everyone who connects with the energy behind it.
From 2/10 to 2/23, “Send It” is competing in the Flair AI Radio’s Battle of the Bands (Rock/Alternative category).
We would love your support and your vote.
