About SELECTED STACKS
Highlighting Substack Publications who focus on mostly short Posts. Let's explore how this Section can benefit us and what to expect.
Life is an adventure worth exploring! So, what about Selected Stacks?
The Mission
Building an online community takes time. How do we build community? By genuinely interacting with others. This is where my wheels began to turn and the mission started to unravel.
I’m a natural investigator. If someone is interacting with me, I want to know about them. First, to weed through the fake accounts. Then to take the time and really look into the person behind their work. Read some of their posts and notes, interact with them, like, and restack their posts.
Sometimes, I take it a step further to get to know them just a little better. I’ll read their bio, their snippet, and/or their about page. Maybe even check out their links to their website or whatever else they have linked. To get to know the person behind the art that they work so hard to create. Basically stalking them, but in a good way. lol
This is where Selected Stacks Section started brewing in my mind. My initial mission was to just create a list to refer back to with all the Substack Publishers that I genuinely enjoy and already investigated.
However, I am forgetful at times. So, instead of just a list, I wanted to have a post dedicated to them also. This way if I forget the name of a publication, but remember their logo, or remember part of their bio., I can still find them.
Then once I find them on the Selected Stacks Section, I’ll have their links and a little bit about them as to why I enjoyed them in the first place.
How about Selected Stacks for a name?
Well, I tossed a lot of names around, but my friend,
threw this one out and it stuck. It made me think of how we all have a selected few books, movies, songs, and Substacks that we enjoy most. How selecting a Stack that we genuinely connect with can be hard to find sometimes. Why not have someone introduce us to a few along the way?
That was my thought process. Everything is obviously a work in progress, but the intention for this Section is to feature Substackers who mainly focus on short posts. Stories, essays, poems, whatever it is, as long as it’s on the shorter side.
What to Expect from a Selected Stacks Post:
A short post, just how we like them.
The focus will be on one Substack Artist per Post who creates mostly short publications.
Their logo and links will be included in the post.
A brief description of what they offer. Such as what’s in their bio., their snippet, maybe a little of their about page, and/or a post of theirs.
What we enjoy most about their work.
Who recommended them to the Selected Stacks Section along with a brief review as to why they recommend them.
You can recommend your favorite Substack Artist that focuses mostly on short publications, by leaving a comment on any Selected Stacks post.
I'm looking for a bit of a review of their work from you. How their work makes you feel, then offer reasons for why it affects you that way. Any metaphors or analogies that you can share.
We want them to shine, but we also want you to shine. Your recommendation and review will intrigue others to look at their work or not. If your writing of the recommendation and review is good, others might want to also look into your work.
Once you recommend someone and give a brief review of why you like their work, I’ll have a look at their Substack to make sure it’s mostly short posts. Then, I’ll reach out to them. If I’m given permission by them to add them to the Selected Stacks Section, I’ll begin my work.

I love how you are focused on creating community with Selected Stacks. Like you, when I find a writer I like, I explore more of their work.
I loved the idea as soon as you mentioned it to me. Just like you, I am looking for community - many of us are. But all of us have limited time. Even if we have all the time, we have limited time - and probably a touch of ADHD.
I immediately pictured the space as a little Café, it was a French Café in my head. I'm am quietly sitting at a little round table. I am enjoying a hot tea. In the corner, there are a few selected magazines and some of those wooden newspaper sticks on the wall. In my head, the chair is comfortable, even though bistro chairs never are. I have about 15 minutes before I need to dive back into the hustle and bustle of the world - and I'd like to insert one new thought into my brain before I dive back in - some little story or connection that could entertain me all day. I can't wait to stop by.
